The main building of Tatra Museum is a
valuable antiquity in Zakopane art style. Built in years 1913-1922
according to joint projects of Stanisław Witkiewicz (elevation) and
Franciszek Mączyński (technical project). The main building of
Tatra Museum stores permanent exhibtions: historical, etnographical
and natural. All of which shows us history of the region and richness
of Tatra and podhalan culture and nature.
Historical Exposition
ell documented by photos, archives and
press, it invites the visitors to history of Podhale. Pointing out
the first, phehistorical traces of man living on this region, it
zooms in the creation of Podhale settlements. Further in, it shows
the development of Zakopane, from a little highlander village under
Tatra mountain, through its sanatorium and cultural unification
period during partitions, to "winter capital of Poland" in
interwar period and during occupation of Zakopane and Podhale, when
cospiration units like Tatra Confederation were active. Historial
exposition also reviews highlander's finantial emigration path –
starting from southern side of Tatra down to Hungary, later to far
away lands like USA.
Ethnographical exposition
The tour of ethnographical exposition
starts up with "black" and "white" chambers of
podhalan hut replica, divided by vestibule with richly pegged front
door, which was bought from Stanisław Wójciak's house in
Kościelisko for museum collection in 1905. This interior desing
helps visitors to imagine how everyday life of 19
th
century highlander family must have looked like.
Next part of the exposition is
dedicated to past economy of Rocky Podhale: gathering, hunting,
shepherding and farming. This is also where older and contemporary
highlander craftworks have found their place: tools and items made of
wood (like beautiful spoon-holders), leatherworks, blacksmith's works
or glass paintings. In showcases are sculptures, ceramics, musical
instruments and the old and present highlander outfi

in 18
th century and to the genesis of biggest mountain

with Baltazar Hacquet, author of the first Tatra map with geological
features. There are also two relief maps of Tatra and Pieniny. Part
