Summer Mountain Trips

Summer Mountain Trips

When packing yourself for mountain trip, you should remember about basic rules that can make your tour not only satisfying, but also safe. The mountain weather can be unstable, so rain, storm or ever snow can suprise us even during short and seemingly easy expedition. Those factors should be thought out already at planning phase of the tour.

1. Route planning

Before we start packing, we should consider our destination. Where to go, what to see and, most importantly, are we strong enough to finish the walk. Tatra trails are well prepared and marked, but it doesn't mean that tourists shouldn't equip themselves with map – paper or digital (bear in mind that connection can be lost at some places!). First and foremost, to feel safe and call for help in need, we should know the trail color, the place of our departure and the expected destination of our walk. It's recommended to inquire about estimated track finishing time and its description (track characteristic, possible difficulties). It's worth remembering that trails in Tatra are closed from dusk till dawn, so one should make plans for accomodation after nightfall.

2. Clothing

Outfit prepared for the journey should primarily be comfortable and adjusted to the time of year. You can equip yourself with thermoactive underwear which helps body ventilation. You should keep in mind that even in summer, the higher parts of mountains can be cool and windy so besides t-shirts, shorts, you should provide warmer clothes (for example longlseeves, pants, rain jackets). Because of stronger sunlight and wind, we should always remember about headgear (for example buff scarf, baseball cap, ear coverings, head sash). Sometimes even on summer, at windy days, thin gloves are necessary. Also, suitable socks, preventing feet rubbing, and strong, ground-holding trekking shoes are extremely crucial. If we plan on staying in shelter, we shouldn't forget about house footware, for example sandals or slippers.

3. Equipment

Of course, the most basic part of your gear should be comfortable and well matched backpack. It should store sunglasses, cream with filter and flashlight (preferably a headlight). It's good to have a basic first-aid kit with elastic bandage, patches, respiration mask, gum or latex gloves, and space blanket. You should also consider trekking poles, which are helpful mostly when clibing down (knee joints protections).

4. Eatables

The food should primarily supply us with strength during the walk. Sandwitches are suitable (with butter, cheese, ham, egg etc.) as well as chocolade, dried fruits, bananas. Remember about the beverages (water, warm and sweet tea).

5. Weather forecast and safety

Before departing we should charge our phone battery and read the weather forecast (available on websites www.topr.pl and www.tpn.pl). Bear in mind that mountain storms are very dangerous and it's not recommended to hike at the time. The fog is similairly deceiving and can confuse even seasoned tourists. You should also be prepared for track change and learn the surrounding trail layout before leaving. Please note that trail colors do not mark their difficulty level.
To ensure your safety it's best to tell your relatives and close ones about your plans (tour destination, chosen path, departure time, estimted time of return, sleep location).
